When should an online order reserve stock?

Stock reservation is a commercial decision expressed in software. Reserve too early and abandoned checkouts can hide available goods. Reserve too late and two customers may purchase the same remaining item. The right rule depends on your operation.

Use one scarce product

For a Colombian seller, choose a product with one unit left and trace two buyers ordering at nearly the same time. Decide when each buyer sees availability, when stock is held and how long the hold lasts.

Include payment delays

If a chosen payment method can remain pending, decide whether the item stays reserved. Explain the customer-facing consequence. A later payment confirmation needs a defined path if stock was released and sold elsewhere.

Give staff a safe adjustment

A return, damaged item or warehouse correction may change availability outside the website. Establish which system owns the stock figure and how a discrepancy becomes visible. Do not silently add two quantities together because both systems sent an update.

Review provider-specific order and inventory behavior before implementing custom rules. HTTP conflict responses are one technical tool for conflicting changes, not a complete inventory policy. Bring the scarce-item scenario to an ecommerce discussion and agree the business decisions before development.
